Fighting Food Waste
Food Bank Donations in 2022
We donated 1.75 million pounds of #tomatoes to food banks like Feeding San Diego, San Diego Food Bank, and Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona in 2022. Though natural, diverse appearances are not celebrated in the produce aisle, so our mission to reduce #FoodWaste means finding healthy tomatoes a new home, and keeping them out of the landfill, when they don’t have the ideal look stores want. Healthy food should never go from farm to landfill, but too much of it does just because it wouldn’t look perfect in a produce aisle. It’s our mission to reduce #FoodWaste and in 2021 we donated 2.5 million pounds of nutritious #tomatoes to food banks such as Feeding San Diego, Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, San Diego Food Bank, and California Association of Food Banks. We often donate healthy #tomatoes like these, that don’t look quite right for market, to food banks to help fight #foodwaste. This batch ended up at a local community center where it could help those in need. Pick up our tasty tomatoes in-store at Walmart, Meijer, and other retailers.
We sent more than 1.6 million pounds of healthy and nutritious tomatoes, which would have gone to waste simply because they lacked the perfect market look, to food banks in 2020 in our continuing mission to reduce #FoodWaste. They included Feeding San Diego, San Diego Food Bank, Borderlands Produce Rescue, California Association of Food Banks, and Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona. To help fight #FoodWaste, we donated 1.9 million pounds of tomatoes to food banks in 2019, including Feeding San Diego, Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, Borderlands Produce Rescue, and others. The only crime these tomatoes committed was not having the correct look for store shelves (nature is full of diversity, so why do we demand uniformity from our food?), but thankfully they were able to nourish those in need. In our continuing fight against #FoodWaste, we donated 1.2 million pounds of #tomatoes to food banks like Feeding America's Feeding San Diego and Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona in 2018. This way healthy tomatoes, that for whatever reason don’t have the right look for the market, can nourish the hungry instead of rotting in a landfill. We donated more than 1.2 million pounds of produce to food banks like Feeding America's Feeding San Diego and Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona in 2017. We believe it’s wrong to waste healthy food simply based on looks, yet nutritious produce often ends up in landfills for exactly this reason. Many retailers reject produce if it doesn't look precisely how they think customers want it. Donating to a #FoodBank helps #FightFoodWaste like this and hunger too. Learn more at feedingamerica.org

Food Waste is a major problem. Here's a tip: Use a Vacuum Sealer and refrigerate or freeze your leftovers and bulk buys. And be sure to label them! Vacuum sealing will dramatically increase the freshness of your foods. You will still have to be proactive and keep tabs on your fridge and freezer.
