Dames a la Mode: Photo
Gallery of Fashion, October 1795. This plate is a perfect example of why the Gallery of Fashion images are so wonderful- all the background! It’s telling us a lovely little story. What I don’t get about this story is why she is wearing a bikini top over her bodice! (Actually it calls that a “blue silk handkerchief trimmed with lace, round the neck.” I still think it looks weird!)
"Neck or Nothing" by James Gillray after Georgiana Keate, 1792. From the British Museum description: A satire on high collars and voluminous neck-cloths. A good-looking young man stands full face ... his coat ... is open to display a double-breasted waistcoat with wide lapels, within which is another collar and a swathed neckcloth tied in a bow. The high collar of his tail-coat adds to the numerous swathings round his neck ... He wears striped stockings and low shoes with rosettes.
