The Nag Hammadi codices - a collection of 13 ancient codices w/ 50+ texts, written in Coptic. Discovered in Upper Egypt in 1945, buried in a jar near the Egyptian village of Nag Hammadi. According to Szirmai these were the earliest surviving binding structures, dated from the 3rd/4th century AD. This structure was made using J.A. Szirmai’s instructions in The Archaeology of Medieval Bookbinding, and the model from Preservation Dept., University of Iowa Libraries.
