Elementary Art Unit: Color Theory

I have been kind of slack on updating this blog, but I'm hoping to get better! My photography blog and my classroom webpage take my attention away from here, even though this blog is my baby. I wanted to blog about teaching elementary art units across grade levels. Last year I tried this a few times, mostly for my sanity, but also to help manage time by using similar supplies across grades. I did an ancient art unit with k-5 last year and it was really fun. It was also quick and easy to…

Colour Wheel Trees

I'm starting a new residency tomorrow and this is a project I'll be doing with Grade 1-2. Similar to all those Kandinsky tree projects out there only focusing on the colour wheel. MATERIALS REQUIRED: - substrate (base), you could use paper, canvas, poster board. I'm using 1/8" MDF - acrylic paint in yellow, orange, red, purple, blue and green, and whatever background colour you want - sandpaper - paper for painting - assorted card stock, scraps of scrapbooking paper - white glue - printed…

Color Wheel Spirals

I got the idea for this project from a former colleague. Her gallery is here. I love the color wheel, but realize that not all people do. I love that this project allows for students to mix their own secondary colors but isn't a boring, generic color wheel. I also love adding the iPad step at the end to add interest for students that might not have been excited about the painting step. Here is the video I created using a free trial version of Camtasia. I love Camtasia. If I was in the market…

New Colorful Bulletin Boards!

A big thanks goes out to the district maintenance men for their speedy work in installing two new bulletin boards in my classroom! There were two blank walls in my new room, and I couldn't stand it any longer! THEY NEEDED ART! So I have filled them with the 8th grade painting assignments. At left are the motif color wheels. Students design a motif to fit in the wedge shape of the color wheel and paint each color...don't they look awesomely graphic! I really love when they come up with fun…
