And it’s also the busiest, full of necessary chores and preparation for Easter, as well as meaningful Holy Week devotions practiced by Catholics for thousands of years. I love these Stations of the Cross coloring pages as an activity for kids (and adults) during Lent, and especially on Good Friday, during that period of 12-3pm when Jesus hung on the cross. During those hours, I make a real effort to keep our home quiet and focused. This is quite a challenge in a house full of children! But I try. This year I want to highlight one aspect of our Lent observance that I've come to especially appreciate: Decorating for Lent. Decorating our homes is something we usually associate with Christmas. It's SUCH a meaningful part of the Christmas season for me. Christmas, Prayer For Family, Catholic Mom, Catholic Valentines, Christmas Seasons, Good Deeds

Particularly with the Stations of the Cross. On its surface, it SEEMS like a devotion that’s perhaps better suited for old ladies who were going to be hanging out in the church anyway. It’s about suffering and death. As usually practiced in the US, it’s quiet and orderly and indoors, and sometimes very long. But if you look into the history of the devotion, it was actually a lot more kid-friendly. #catholicallyear #lent Holy Father

I love the tradition of schools and homeschool groups doing All Saints dress up days in lieu of Halloween costumes. This is not going to be one of those posts where I tell you what to do, because so much of this is going to depend on your particular kids and their particular environment. But I know it's something that young moms struggle with, that I struggled with, that I continue to struggle with. So today, I'm going to share how we handle touchy subjects, whether they are brought up by us, or by the kids themselves, or are forced upon us by circumstances beyond our control. I'm going to start this by saying that plenty of people do not discipline as early as I do. Which is fine. I am a firm believer in doing what works for your family. I also believe that the level of discipline in your home is up to you and can be changed at any time, by just being clear about your expectations and consistent in your follow-through (and of course, always meaning what you say). Unless you were homeschooled yourself (which I wasn't) the decision to homeschool your own kids can feel overwhelming in a thousand different ways. It's easy to look at a really easy-going homeschooling Mom and say, "I couldn't live like that, I need order and routine." Or to look at a homeschooling Mom who is really structured and say, "I couldn't live like that, I need more flexibility." Lady, Homeschool Mom, Flexibility, Routine

I should warn you that I think some scariness is good for my kids, I have a great devotion to the martyrs, and I am just contrary enough that I have no problem showing up at a gathering full of children dressed as priests and princesses with MY child sporting a severed neck that's squirting blood. I guess it's nice that I was embracing the whole being pregnant thing, but, really, dressing like you're at a costume party isn't something that's sustainable in the long term. And as other Catholic moms before me have discovered, for many of us, being pregnant isn't a novelty -- it's a way of being. Because after pregnant, came nursing, then ten months later came pregnant again, then nursing, then . . . well, you get the idea. But almost every day our school work does get done. We have a daily syllabus, and we do it. I want my kids to take their education and their responsibilities seriously, and I want to take my role as their teacher seriously. Especially that last part has been a work in progress for me. But the more kids I've had, the more I've realized that the more prepared I am for a school day, the better it seems to go. Big Kids, Teaching, Education, Second Grade, School Week, School Work
