Guitar Girl’d Show Review: Noise Pop San Francisco Slays Saturday Night

It was one of those happy accidents. When I arrived earlier than expected for the San Francisco Noise Pop Festival at the Great American Music Hall on Saturday night, boy, was I glad. The aim was to catch the inaugural tour performance by Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside, but little did I know that the other three bands on the bill would delight me just as much. Kacey Johansing

Photo Gallery: Experience Guitarist Malina Moye

In the April 2013 issue of Guitar World, you’ll find a feature on the fabulous Malina Moye. Moye, a lefty player who flips her guitar over and plays with the strings upside down, is a fearless performer who knows how to put on a show! Her new release, Rock & Roll Baby, is slated to drop in the spring.

Guitar Girl'd: Show Report — Ladies Rise Up and Rock

This weekend, I had the distinct pleasure of attending the first of what will hopefully be a series of events called Ladies Rise Up and Rock. The brainchild of Carl Mancuso, this high-energy concert featured some very talented, female-fronted bands. Its goal is to raise money for Grammy in the Schools, which brings music education to schools all over the country.

Guitar Girl'd: Interview with Sharon Aguilar on CeeLo, 2NE1 and Miss President

Sharon Aguilar wasn’t even going to audition. But what the heck. She was in the right place at the right time, took a chance and landed a gig playing and touring worldwide with CeeLo Green. As a student at Musicians Institute, Aguilar knew going to the Hollywood-based school would give her opportunities. She just didn’t realize they'd come so soon and mean so much.

The members of von Grey are (from left) sisters Kathryn, Fiona, Annika and Petra von Grey. “Our whole life revolves around music,” Fiona von Grey says. My Music, Good Music, Sister Songs, Ventura Beach, Four Sisters, Guitar Girl, Girls Magazine, Female Guitarist, Women In Music

Guitar Girl'd: Interview with von Grey — Sisters in Song

I came across von Grey as I was bopping around SXSW last month. I immediately had to stop and find out: A. who their manager was, B. who their publicist was, and C., how could I talk to one of these extremely talented young ladies. Because, yes, they blew me away. Consisting of four sisters (say that 10 times fast!) with the last name von Grey, the band is an Americana masterpiece.

Guitar Girl'd: Interview with Serena Ryder on Her New Album, 'Harmony'

You may not realize it, but if you watch any TV at all, you’ve heard Serena Ryder’s “Stompa.” I know I have! I’ve rocked to her infectious beat during airings of Hawaii Five-0, Grey’s Anatomy and a commercial or two as well. Yes, it’s that ubiquitous!

Guitar Girl’d: Interview with New York City Country Girl Ali Isabella

I wasn’t sure what to expect from singer/songwriter Ali Isabella. I met her at her hotel in Los Angeles the day before she was to perform for a showcase I hosted at the ASCAP expo last month for the Women’s International Music Network. I can honestly say I was delighted with everything about her — her smile, her giggle, her infectious music, her strong songwriting, and her energy. Like a breath of fresh air.

Guitar Girl'd: Interview with Danielia Cotton on the Release of 'The Gun in Your Hand'

Some have it tougher and more painful than most. And some take that pain and create something kick ass. When Danielia Cotton faced the death of her unborn twins, and her own mortality, she could have shut down. Instead she dug deep and came up with a collection of songs that screams survival. This woman ain’t goin’ down without a fight!

Show Review: Trixie Whitley at the Brick and Mortar, San Francisco

The first time I saw Trixie Whitley play live, she apologized for having a cold. It was at last year’s tour with Daniel Lanois’ Black Dub at the Fillmore, and man, she could have had the flu and still sounded amazing. Last night’s intimate showcase at Brick and Mortar in San Francisco just cemented how talented this petite firebrand is. Her solo performances introducing songs off her upcoming album, Fourth Corner, were full of her signature soul and angst.

Guitar Girl'd: Women’s International Music Network and NewBay Media Present the She Rocks Awards

This past Friday, I did something I never dreamed I’d do. I hosted an awards show honoring women in the music industry. It was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life! As part of the production of the awards show, I also launched a new organization aimed at supporting and uniting female musicians, producers, engineers, executives, publicists, managers, teachers, students and everyone in between.

Guitar Girl'd: Interview with Steph Macpherson on the Release of 'Bells & Whistles'

There’s good luck. There’s hard work. And then there’s Steph Macpherson, a case study in both — and in being in the right place at the right time. This Canadian singer/songwriter has just released her debut album, Bells & Whistles, and has been touring the West Coast in support. Her story goes like this ...

Exposed: 10 Female Guitarists You Should Know, Part 6

To say I’m thrilled to see Orianthi on the cover of the April 2013 issue of Guitar World is an understatement. But what even I didn't realize (until I dug a bit) was that this is only the third time in Guitar World’s history that a female guitarist has graced this place of honor. The first was Chrissie Hynde in March 1981, followed by Courtney Love in January 1999. That’s more than a decade between covers. So now what?!
