One incredible luck for dacian archaeology: in 1965, in Philippi (Greece) was discovered a tombstone of a roman officer. It turned out to be the leader of the unit that was tasked by the emperor Trajan to track down Decebalus, the last of the dacian kings! You can see that, even if he had a long military career (revealed by the inscription), his most important achievement was that from the Dacian Wars, sculpted on the upper part of the stone, a carving similar to that frim the Trajan's Colum... Trajans Column with Pannonii Soldier. Hungary's original inhabitants were Pannonii (Pannonians), a group of tribes akin to Illyrians. From 4th century B.C. it was invaded by various Celtic tribes. Little is heard of Pannonia until 35 B.C, when its inhabitants, allies of Dalmatians, were attacked by Augustus, who conquered & occupied Siscia (Sisak). The country was not definitely subdued until 9 B.C, when it was incorporated into Illyricum, the frontier of which was extended as far as the Danube. Illustration of a Dacian War 2nd Century CE legionary, for Roman Miltary Equipment 2nd Ed. by Bishop & Coulston. Note the arm armor. This addition to the legionary's rig was as a direct result of dealing with the Dacians' falx. This dreaded weapon, similar to a large sickle, came in two variants: the long falx or a shorter, one-handed weapon called a sica. Either one could lop off a man's unprotected arm with relative ease.
