Margaretha Geertruida "Margreet" MacLeod (Aug 1876 - Oct better known by the stage name Mata Hari, was a Dutch exotic dancer and courtesan who was convicted of being a spy for Germany during World War I and executed by firing squad in France.

Louise Brooks (November 14, 1906 – August 8, 1985) is best known as the lead in 3 feature films made in Europe, including two G. W. Pabst films: Pandora's Box (1929), Diary of a Lost Girl (1929), and Prix de Beauté (Miss Europe, 1930). She starred in seventeen silent films and eight sound films before retiring in 1935. Brooks published her memoir, Lulu in Hollywood, in 1982 and died 3 years later.

In 1909, Florence Lawrence became the first movie star. Working with Carl Laemmle, she was the first actor named publically and there was a massive publicity campaign to popularize her, focusing on her alleged death via car accident. When Lawrence was revealed to be alive she became instantly and massively famous. Previous to Lawrence all actors were anonymous. By 1911, credits appeared at the beginnings of films to identify actors and other personnel on the film.
