Citadelle Laferrière, Bonnet a L’Eveque mountain, Haiti. Rowls:This is an Isabeau Doucet photograph. Citadelle Laferrière was built in the early 1800s on a mountaintop in Haiti. It is supposed to be the largest fortress in the Americas, and has a reputation as an unsettling place.

The Citadelle Laferrière or, Citadelle Henry Christophe, or simply the Citadelle (English: Citadel), is a large mountaintop fortress in northern Haiti, approximately 17 miles km) south of the city.

This July we are celebrating Milot, Haiti, home of Hôpital Sacré Coeur! Among the historical places to visit in Milot are the ruins of the Sans Souci Palace. Built in the early 1800’s for ruler Henri Christophe, Sans Souci Palace is currently in ruins as a result of and earthquake in 1842, and has never been reconstructed.  As you can see in these photos by photographers Patti Gabriel and Nathan MacFarland, Sans Souci Palace is a beautiful structure even in its destructed state.
