St Rose of Lima (April 20, 1586–August 24, 1617) was the first person born in the Americas to be canonized by the Catholic Church. From her youth she was devoted to the poor and to prayer and penance. She is the patroness of America, indigenous people of the Americas; of gardeners; of florists; of the City of Lima; of Peru; of the New World; of Sittard, the Netherlands; of India; of people misunderstood for their piety and of the resolution of family quarrels.
